STQ Proposal After Action - AA/A 113

In so many days before the regional tournaments, I laid out a different approach to the state tournament qualification process. A quick reminder is as follows:

1 Take the top 3 from each region, no questions asked. The top 3 from each region would be referred to as “The 12 Regional Qualifiers” for the sake of this discussion.

2 All wrestlers that place sixth in their region are out, no questions asked.

3 Wrestlers who place 4th or 5th go under review for the remaining four qualification spots based on cumulative criteria. For the sake of this conversation, we will call all of the 4th and 5th place winners “Wild Cards”. Who does the review, the coaches’ committee in conjunction with the remaining coaches.

4 The suggested cumulative criteria would be: 1 Head-to-head wins over the 12 Regional Qualifiers. 2 Head-to-head wins over the other Wild Cards. 3 Their Regional Tournament winning %. For example, a wrestler placing 5th and going 2&2 is better than a wrestler that places 4th but went 0&2. You should have to win a match in order to qualify for the state tournament. These three criteria would be a start. Whichever wrestlers hit the most criteria, get in. If everybody got on board and organized, this might take a couple of hours.
For “fun”, here is what the proposal would look like with the actual results for all four regional tournaments:

Region 1: Parsell, Berkeley Springs, Champion. Anderson, Oak Glen, Runner Up. Durr, Keyser, Third Place.
Region 2: McDonough, Doddridge, Champion. Tallamy, Braxton, Runner Up. Watson, Ritchie County, Third Place.
Region 3: Bostic, Hoover, Champion. Scarafino, Independence, Runner Up. Johnson, Riverview, Third Place.
Region 4: Meeks, Williamstown, Champion. Osbourne, Ripley, Runner Up. Blackhurst, Ravenswood, Third Place.

THE REGIONAL WILD CARDS (4th and 5th place):
Region 1: Lilley, East Fairmont, Fourth Place. King, Tyler Consolidated, Fifth Place.
Region 2: Trimble, Gilmer County, Fourth Place. Sears, Clay County, Fifth Place.
Region 3: Sweeney, Shady Spring, Fourth Place. There were not enough wrestlers for a Fifth Place Winner.
Region 4: Shaffer, Point Pleasant, Fourth Place. Hatfield, Logan, Fifth Place.

REVIEW AND DISCUSSION:
Lilley of East Fairmont: 12 Regional Qualifier wins: Watson, Ritchie County 6to5. Wild Card wins: King of Tyler Consolidated by pin. Shaffer of Point Pleasant 5 to 2.
King of Tyler Consolidated: 12 Regional Qualifier wins: Watson, Ritchie County by pin. Wild Card wins: Trimble of Gilmer by pin.
Trimble of Gilmer County: 12 Regional Qualifier wins: None. Wild Card wins: King of Tyler Consolidated 6to5. Sears of Clay 12to9SV.
Sears of Clay: 12 Regional Qualifier wins: None. Wild Card wins: King of Tyler Consolidated by pin.
Sweeney of Shady Spring: 12 Regional Qualifier wins: None. Wild Card wins: None.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTARY: There could be some matches that occurred that I am not aware of. Feel free to respond.

SUMMARY: In using this new proposal, the four Wild Card state tournament qualifiers would be: Lilley, King of Tyler Consolidated, Trimble of Gilmer and Sears of Clay.
